While most of the crew seems to be preventing the ship from taking on too much water, after our resistance, Tomkin has been showing us the ropes - literally. Out of sheer curiosity, I asked him why he joined Caine’s crew, to which he simply replied that he didn’t want to die. It’s as good a reason as any I suppose. Tomkin also mentioned that, after being betrayed by his fleet, Caine had the runes carved around the ship by a Priestess in the Ruins of Vael though he doesn’t believe that many of them do anything. I figured that they were probably for warding off water spirits since pirates tend to be superstitious folk, and that seemed to be as good an explanation as any.
After working for some hours, Treldaan expressed concern over how long exactly we were going to be in Caine’s employ. He was rewarded with less than enthusiastic looks from both Severin and I. He was, after all, the first to take the knee of his own accord. If he hadn’t wanted to be a pirate, he shouldn’t have done that, for I don’t think Caine is the type to just let his crew leave once in port.
Sev, for his part, was growing more and more uneasy with the hanging bodies above us. Especially when he noticed that they had their eyes and ears removed, their mouths sewn shut, and their tongues nailed to their chests. He asked me why, probably deciding that I would know the much about why this was done given by affinity for the dead, but all I could do was shrug and suggest that it was perhaps so they couldn’t speak to anyone that Caine didn’t want them to - like Gaanu Tench.
The rest of the day was rather uneventful, which I suppose on an infamous ship like this, is a good thing. The boys and I explored the ship after Tomkin released us for the day.
