Elora
It's Me!
Elora grew up in a small town mostly made up of farmers. It’s a very close knit town where everyone knows everyone. Elora was taken in by her human parents after they found her alone in the woods when she was about 4 years old. She doesn’t really remember anything before this time. She had likely been wandering alone for a few days based on the state she was in when they found her. Her parents had been wanting a child for a while and thought that finding her was a blessing. The rest of the town was a little nervous at first about this strange tiefling child, but quickly grew to love her as one of their own. Elora had a very happy childhood with her family and town. A few years after she was found, she discovered she could perform small acts of magic. Everyone was delighted by this, including Elora, and she could often be found showing off her new tricks to the other children. While happy and excited though, Elora was also nervous. She could tell that something about her magic was weird and dangerous. She felt like she couldn’t fully control it. So while she delighted in her little displays of changing the color of a candle or making shimmering fireworks in her hands (cantrips), she never really pushed to expand her power as she was scared that the uncontrollable feeling would grow. She spent the rest of her childhood much in this same vein of performing small magic tricks and helping her parents more and more with the farm as she grew older. When Elora was around 9, her parents had a little boy. She loves her little brother dearly and dotes on him, especially when he is still young. They are very close, though they do tease and fight occasionally.
When she was 18, a group of bandits came to town. They started demanding that everyone in town hand over their money. Nobody in town was a fighter and they were scared. Elora knew she wasn’t very strong, but she hoped she could somehow convince them to leave the town alone. She came out to face them alone and did her best to intimidate them into leaving using her unusual appearance and natural charisma. They weren’t having it and threatened to start killing people if they didn’t get the money soon. Elora was more scared than she had ever been and when she reached into herself, her magic leaped up to meet her. A burst of shifting, chaotic energy leapt from her to the group and hit the leader. He immediately fell over and the rest of the bandits panicked, not expecting dangerous magic from what was supposed to be a bunch of easy targets. Elora also felt her magic bubble up in a way that she had never experienced before. After sending out her initial burst, bolts of lightning shot from her and struck the other bandits. The only 2 left standing made a run for it and everyone was too distracted by what Elora had done to chase them. After standing there for a minute, Elora passed out from the stress and shock of it all. She woke up a little while later in her parents house, being tended to by her family. She found that once everyone heard that she was okay, they started praising her as the town hero. Elora was relieved that everyone was alright, but a little uncomfortable being referred to as a hero. She didn’t regret any of her actions, but was terrified of how her magic had burst forth without her control. She felt incredibly lucky that it had only hurt the bandits instead of anyone else.
From then on, life mostly continued as normal for the town. Months passed and for most people, they only gained a new respect for Elora. Anytime she left her house, she would be affectionately greeted as the town hero. Elora kept up appearances, but in private she was not doing well. She kept having nightmares about that night. In her dreams, her magic didn’t hit the bandits, but instead hit her family and friends. She slowly stopped doing even the smallest magic because her fear grew so much. She also started isolating herself, spending more time out working in hopes that she would be so exhausted that she would be able to sleep. About a year after the attack, her family finally confronted her about how she clearly was not doing well. She eventually told them about her fears. They comforted her as best they could and decided to try to figure out a solution together. After about 2 months of trying to work on it together, they really weren’t any closer to figuring out her magic. The only positive was that Elora felt more comfortable using cantrips again, as they didn’t cause that same uncontrollable feeling that the more powerful spell she used against the bandits did. Elora came to the decision that the only way she could hope to learn more about her magic was to leave home and hope to find someone that knew more about it. A tiny town of farmers wasn’t exactly swimming in magical knowledge after all. Soon after turning 20, she said her goodbyes to her family and set off to hopefully find some way to control her magic.
