Founded in the time of Old Terrai, the Smoking Port is a major city on the eastern Gulf of Orseno, off the shore of the Coast of Ruin. The port is built on the cliffs, plateaus, and lowlands of a volcanic island connected to the shore by an old Rakshasa causeway. It is owned by the Padishar Trading Company and governed by one of the company’s representative princes (known as the “prince-in-residence”). The Trading Company is essentially a vassal of the Commerce of Armoria.
History
The Smoking Port was founded in 1624 C.T. of Far Antiquity by Prince Charban Yadu, one of the original Rakshasa Princelings who emerged from the Infernal Realms after the fall of Choradaemonia. It is a volcanic island off the shore of the Gulf of Orseno that served as the base of Charban Yadu’s little princedom until the War of the Princes.
Geography
The city stands on the slopes of a volcanic island, connected to the mainland by an impressive causeway. The central portion of the island is a towering plateau of volcanic and igneous stone; the northern shore of the island provides its “inner” harbors, while the southern, exposed to the Gulf, are known as the “outer” harbors.
Narrow canyons worm through the rock, making up the “kai” regions, the central markets. The upper city upon the high plateau is only accessible from the south; it joins with the lower levels of the island at Betmaker’s Circle.
Most of the buildings of the city are carved out of basaltic and obsidian rock; the structures are carved with details of flames, thorned plants, and small leering faces. Most were originally built under the rule of Prince Yanu by infernal architects and stonemasons, although new structures have been built as the centuries go on they have mostly been constructed along the same lines as those that were originally put up on the island.
