Scene by Scene

  1. Sabine’s Watch and the Divine Encounter - During Day 6 of their voyage through the Phantom Sea, Sabine takes watch duty as the ship approaches its destination. The atmosphere begins shifting - humidity increases, the air becomes more wet, and distant ocean splashes suggest land nearby. Sirens begin singing, prompting Sabine to use protective measures including beeswax and salt thrown overboard as wards. During this tense moment, a mysterious divine woman appears beside her on deck - tall, blonde-haired with gold woven through it, wearing flowing white silk robes and ornate sandals with bangles wrapping up her calves. The woman speaks ominously to Sabine, telling her that “death calls to her,” before trailing her fingers along the ship’s banister. When she vanishes, Sabine discovers arcane runes have been carved deep into the wood where the woman touched - symbols that constantly shift between Egyptian, Greek, Norse, and Arabic scripts, actively resisting comprehension even when examined by Alethea’s high Arcana checks.

  2. The Supernatural Storm and Whirlpool - The mysterious encounter triggers a supernatural crisis as a magical bell begins tolling from beneath the ocean, summoning a massive whirlpool that threatens to destroy the Night Wind. The wind intensifies to gale force, the ship rocks violently, and an eddy forms beneath them, pulling the vessel toward destruction. Scarlette struggles at the helm as the rudder becomes jammed, calling for all hands to combat stations. The crew faces a complex skill challenge requiring 12 successes to survive. Corlissandro takes the most dangerous task, rappelling down the side of the storm-lashed ship with guidance from Scarlette to reach the jammed rudder underwater. Using a natural 20 Survival check and 24 Acrobatics (with guidance and luck point), he successfully cuts away massive amounts of kelp blocking the rudder with his dagger. Meanwhile, David secures the ship’s rigging with an exceptional 26 Acrobatics check, pulling down sails to prevent damage. Sabine assists with rigging using her 24 Stealth check to move deftly across the storm-swept deck. Alethea performs crucial magical analysis, rolling a 30 Arcana check to identify the source - a marble bell tower structure beneath the whirlpool. She immediately casts Witch Bolt, dealing 23 damage to disrupt the bell’s magical ringing and granting advantage to the next caster. Chester follows up with a Shatter spell, rolling a 24 spell attack for 10 additional damage to the bell structure.

  3. Percy’s Intervention - With the crew’s efforts proving insufficient to fully escape the supernatural storm, Scarlette drags Percy up from below deck, demanding he take action to help save the ship. Percy, who had remained detached and unhelpful throughout the crisis, finally acts with dramatic flair. He levitates above the ship’s deck, his one visible eye beginning to glow as he pours magical energy into the ocean below. His powerful weather control magic begins calming both the whirlpool and the storm winds. The bell tower stops ringing as the supernatural forces dissipate, the whirlpool loses its pull, and the building structure sinks back beneath the waves. The ship breaks free and stabilizes, though Percy immediately returns below deck with his characteristic indifference, leaving the crew frustrated by his casual attitude toward their near-death experience.

  4. Arrival at Circe’s Island - As the supernatural storm clears, the Night Wind approaches a mysterious tropical island that appears to materialize from nowhere - it had not existed moments before but now presents a clear destination with an apparent port. The crew makes Constitution saving throws due to exhaustion from the harrowing storm encounter, with several members gaining exhaustion levels for rolls below 15. Scarlette secures the ship at the new port and issues strict warnings to the crew about the dangers ahead, emphasizing that they must not separate, consume anything on the island, or touch objects without caution. She establishes a magical protective bond with Sabine using an “11s” card, creating a life-linking spell that prevents death and allows teleportation within 60 feet between them. Percy appears in an unusually good mood as the party prepares to disembark, leading the way off the ship while armed and alert.

  5. Beach Landing and Temple Approach - The party disembarks onto a pristine tropical beach with soft, warm sand and an unnaturally perfect climate. The island displays stunning natural beauty with lush vegetation and colorful flora, but maintains an eerie stillness - no wildlife movement, no passage of time, creating an unsettling atmosphere despite the paradise-like appearance. Gestra casts Pass Without Trace to enhance the party’s stealth as they form a travel order and begin following a marked path through the tropical landscape. Alethea summons Hermes, her sphinx familiar, to assist with monitoring Chester and his cannon “Admiral Belchforth.” They approach an ancient temple featuring Aztec/Mayan architectural style with a massive, steep staircase leading upward. The temple appears to be carved from stone with intricate decorations and rises impressively from the jungle surroundings.

  6. Temple Entrance and Door Selection - The climb up the temple’s steep, narrow stairs proves extremely challenging, requiring Athletics checks from all party members. Results vary dramatically - Sabine struggles with a roll of 3, while others like Alethea (16), Chester (15), and Gestra (19) fare better. Players rolling below 15 suffer one level of exhaustion, with Scarlette accumulating 2 levels due to her previous overwork during the sea voyage. Upon reaching the top, they discover the temple door stands open, revealing a long hallway decorated with portraits and statues depicting unfamiliar Grecian-themed mythology involving ocean creatures and gods. Inside the main chamber, they find three sealed doors with magical wards, each marked by distinct animal symbols: a dragon door (identified as likely deadly), a lion/panther door (associated with Mayan royalty symbolism), and a swan door (anachronistic for the region but linked to Greek gods like Apollo, Aphrodite, and Zeus). After extensive investigation - Chester’s History check of 23 provides crucial cultural context, while various Investigation and Survival checks examine each door’s properties - the party debates their choice. Chester recommends the lion door as safest based on historical analysis, but after discussion, Scarlette chooses the swan door.

  7. Descent into the Temple Depths - The swan door animates when activated, revealing a large marble swan statue that serves as both guardian and passage marker. The party descends through increasingly dark corridors that require Alethea’s Dancing Lights cantrip for illumination. The architecture shifts to Grecian style with elaborate artwork depicting oceanic and divine scenes that don’t match any known mythology. The walls feature intricate carvings and iconography as they move deeper into the temple complex. They eventually reach a large chamber supported by pillars and containing multiple sarcophagi arranged throughout the space. Two large statues with crossed spears guard the far end of the chamber, blocking a sealed passage. The sarcophagi bear inscriptions in Arabic and other ancient languages, which Alethea translates to reveal divine titles: “Lord of Wind,” “Goddess of Time,” “Goddess of the Moon,” “God of the Sun,” “God of Water,” and “Goddess of Harvest.” The chamber represents a tomb complex dedicated to various deities from different pantheons.

  8. The Love Riddle Chamber - Chester approaches the guardian statues to check for traps, rolling an Investigation 18 but finding no mechanical dangers. The statues stand atop additional sarcophagi - one male and one female - that contain riddle inscriptions rather than divine titles. Alethea reads the male inscription: “yet have no name, I cannot be bought, Though many will pay,” while the female inscription states: “I bind without chain, I burn without flame, I cross every border.” David performs an Investigation 18 check and discovers that a tablet embedded in the sarcophagi is not missing pieces but was intentionally broken in half, suggesting the riddles work together. After the party speculates about various abstract concepts, Sabine correctly identifies the answer as “Love.” When she speaks the word aloud, torches around the chamber flare to life, and the guardian statues animate, moving apart to reveal the previously sealed passageway. The magical mechanism confirms their correct solution and grants them access to proceed deeper into the temple.

  9. Alethea’s Vision and the Rose Petals - As the party moves through the narrow passage opened by the guardian statues, the corridor becomes single-file width with statue eyes that seem to track their movement. Alethea begins experiencing supernatural phenomena - first hearing a beautiful lullaby-like song that fills her with uplifting, giddy energy and a floating sensation before cutting off abruptly, leaving her feeling hollow and empty. During this mystical state, she sees the apparition of a divine woman with blonde hair containing gold ornaments, wearing flowing white robes and holding flowers. The figure speaks a cryptic prophecy: “Before that first word was spoken, there was a song, and in that song two hearts beat as one. One held silence, the other sound. One was still, one was starlight. From salt and sweet together, they were the sea.” The woman then blows the flowers toward Alethea before vanishing. While only Alethea can see the vision directly, Sabine confirms its reality by perceiving the scent of roses and discovering white and pink rose petals scattered on the ground where the figure appeared. Alethea becomes glassy-eyed and speaks briefly in Greek, expressing frustration and asking “Just tell me, what am I missing?” Sabine provides comfort and grounding, helping Alethea focus as they continue forward despite the mystical encounter.

  10. Entering the Hall of Mirrors - The party emerges from the narrow passage into the notorious Hall of Mirrors, a chamber filled with floor-to-ceiling mirrors that Scarlette warns will show lies and illusions designed to test perception and sanity. Before entering, Scarlette distributes identical coins to each party member - each coin contains a single ruby in its center and serves as protection against the mirror’s deceptions. She explains that the coins will help them distinguish reality from illusion within the chamber. Chester sketches his coin for backup reference while David offers prayers for guidance. The party adopts a cautious marching order with Scarlette leading as they prepare to face the psychological trials ahead. As Scarlette enters the mirror chamber, multiple reflections of her image immediately appear, demonstrating the illusion’s power. The session ends with the group poised at the threshold of this dangerous challenge, their ruby coins ready to protect them as they prepare to navigate the maze of deceptive reflections and false images that await within the Hall of Mirrors.
