Raven Queen
God of Death
The Raven Queen is a title that is given to the God of Death, and the position is a strange one. Anyone can become the God of Death - It is the only position of godhood that is accessible to mortals. If a mortal fights through the Shadowfell and challenges the Raven Queen, and manages to win, the current God of Death will perish, and the victor will become the new Raven Queen. Most of the time, if a challenger fails, the God of Death will keep their souls and use them as Champions. Otherwise, they will be sent back to their home plane with their memories wiped.
The previous Raven Queen was a goblin man named Jagthroat who was surprisingly level-headed and took his duties quite seriously. He spent many years as a Champion to the previous Raven Queen before stepping up to challenge them again.
The current Raven Queen was known as Molly in her mortal life. She was a muscled and fiery-haired human lass, with bright green eyes and a face of freckles. Molly was born into a farmer’s family, and helped them raise sheep for wool and meat. She was always hot-headed and clumsy, and her actions brought shame to her family. They wished feverishly for her to leave home, and tried to have her married off several times to be rid of her. When she realized this, she decided to not only leave, but to become so powerful that they would regret their decision.
After several years in the Shadowfell, she made it to the Raven Queen’s throne room, and challenged Jagthroat to a duel. He laughed and sent her away. She kept returning every day until he finally relented, but instead of a battle of strength, he invited her to join him in a battle of wits.
She won. But, by this time she had matured past her frustration, and realized the weight of the responsibility she had chosen to pursue. Instead of having him pass on, she asked Jagthroat to stay with her and teach her how to properly rule. He did, and lived with her as her first Champion for twenty years before he finally retired and joined the souls of the honored dead.
The new Raven Queen has been in the position for close to a hundred years now, which is fairly young for a god. She’s had a few champions, though currently she only has three - one former challenger, and two hand-picked for their devotion.
