Long ago, the inhabitants of Barovia lived in harmony with the land. After Strahd desecrated the Fanes and the Ladies Three disappeared, the Forest Folk still remaining in the land had a great divide come between them.

Those that were outraged by the desecration took up arms under the great leader Kavan the Ruthless. Kavan attempted to fight back for his land, peoples, and beliefs, but his campaign was swiftly ended, and none that left for battle returned. His people now live in hiding.

The other half of the divide were in awe of Strahd’s power, and began to worship him in place of the Ladies Three, since he is now the land. They have actively worked to aid Strahd where possible, though they do not often present themselves publicly.
