Lower-class protectors
Most lower-class persons of serving age who are bodily capable of doing so act as soldiers. Gender is not an issue as the threat of death is very real, very present and very likely to spill into the city if the gates fall. Soldiers are well-compensated because their lives are short. They eat better and have better accommodations than the rest of the lower-class citizenry and it can cause conflicts.
